Rainy Season?

So rainy season came a bit late this year, and as it should have been just about done around this time, it has pretty much just begun. It's been raining nonstop here for a few days, and it's pretty wild. And I thought I've seen lots of rain before.. it's quite ridiculous here.

This photo was taken from a sidewalk which I take every day to class.. If you can see, just beyond the flooded sidewalk is a bridge (does a lot of good, I'd say...)

Anyway, as much as the rain sucks, we all just thought it was heavy rain. Little did we know/expect... We got a mini tornado here last night!!!

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2012-03-20/mini-tornado-hits-townsville/3900808

If you can't see that link.. Here's some photos of the damage we got in Townsville:

Those are just pictures from the news article I had attached..

This photo is of my friend's back yard.. this actually happened before the tornado hit (shows how much wind we've been getting, along with all the damn rain!)
The thing under the blue tarp would be a boat, and next to is is a fence surrounding his pool (These trees were not really even close to that before, considering they were on the OTHER side of his pool.

Don't worry Mom and Dad, I'm fine.. Slept like a baby straight through the tornado (of course I would). Just thought you'd all be interested by the things we get over here.. Haha and everyone thought it was a cyclone coming through.. quite wild!

Now I'm just hoping Cairns (which is 4 hours north) is not in as bad of a condition so my dives this weekend go well!

Cheers guys,
Ash

17.3.12

Hey guys, this is just a bit of an update on the things I've been doing in class and outside of school..
So we were given these skulls to draw and label..
And then a fish head to dissect, to see all the muscle groups and whatnot.
After this, we got to keep the fish head, and essentially melt off all the 'meat'. I now have a bucket full of tiny bones which I must reconstruct to form an even better fish skull than the one in the previous picture... Yeah, this is the work I'm doing in school.

My Full Moon Party experience:
The girls and I about to get on the bus for Maggie Island!
Alex and I hitting the dance floor to get the night started!
We all got our faces painted! (I'm clearly sober in this picture, duh)

Swimming in the ocean during sunrise.. such an incredible experience!

This is a picture back from Crystal Creek, but it's pretty descriptive of what I have been doing here... Climbing rocks, everywhere!
So today is St. Patty's day and we're having a housewarming/ St. Patty's celebration.. There will surely be lots of pictures from that to come! More pictures of my classwork (fish skulls.. YES!)! And how could I forget pictures from the Great Barrier Reef! (I know that's what you've all been waiting for- It's what I have been waiting for!) I'll be diving with Alex in Cairns next weekend and with any luck I'll be able to snap some sick shots with my new underwater camera!

Cheers guys!

Life in the Ville

Hey guys, so for all you who have been checking on my blog, it's pretty much just been mostly pictures.  I've been fairly busy, and my internet is ridiculously slow here so it's been a bit of a hassle getting on this site to blog. Anyway, I have been having an amazing time here so far. I've met heaps of people and I am learning so much about Aussies and their culture!

As you guys can see, my dad just visited for about a week not too long ago and we had a great time. I showed him around Townsville and my campus, and we also got to go up to Cairns and check some stuff out up there.

It was fun, but definitely short-lived so I have planned a trip to go back. In about 2 weeks I'll head up there to do a 3day/2night dive on the Great Barrier Reef! I'll also get my Advanced certification with that! I am SO excited I can't even wait! Hopefully I'll be able to do many more dives while I'm here.

My classes have been going well, although there are not any assessments throughout the semester really to judge how you're doing, so it's crucial for me to consistently stay on top of my work. I found out for one of my classes I have to do a research paper and then give a press release on it! And I only have a month to do it! It's going to be a lot of work, but hopefully I'll do okay on it.  Also, my photography class is pretty cool, we're just learning how to use the digital SLR cameras and hopefully pretty soon I'll be able to post some quality pictures up on here (:

Outside of classes, I've kept myself really busy, hiking and doing parkfit and playing frisbee. I'm going to try to play rugby as well.. I have no clue what any of the rules are in the game, but I'm still gonna give it a shot! The only thing I know about it is from the game I saw, which we lost terribly.. Hopefully the girls team I'll be attempting to join in order to compete for the Fisher Shield (competition between all the dorms on campus) won't do as badly!

In addition to the dive trip I have planned, I've got lots of other things coming up as well. Tomorrow night I'm going to a FullMoon party on Maggie Island! Should be heaps of fun! I'll crash on the island then head over to join my class for a field trip just on the other side. The first weekend of April is our Easter break, so I'll have a few days in which I may head back up to Kuranda to see John Butler Trio perform in the middle of the jungle!!! Ah it will be so amazing! And then the following week is lecture recess and I'll have 2 field trips to attend.

Everything's been pretty fast paced around here, just always doing something. I'm hoping to get some more hiking in and hopefully some more traveling, potentially to the outback, and at some point, maybe at the end of the semester, to New Zealand! I can't wait for all this stuff to happen, but at the same time I just want everything to slow down a bit so I can enjoy it as much as possible!

There will be more pictures coming soon of all the cool things I'll be doing! (:

Catch yous later! (and yes, "yous" is something they actually say here, not a typo!)

Townsville Rugby!

Went to a Townsville Cowboys Rugby game! I had/have no idea what was going on.. no clue what the rules are, I just know our team sucks! Lost 18-0 ): It was a fun experience though!
Townsville Cowboys!

Maggie Island

I got my dad to ride down to the strand with me and we hopped on a ferry to a nearby island called Magnetic Island. We didn't bring our bathing suits, sadly, but still had a nice day on the island. We rented a topless car which looked like something from the Flinstone's and we drove around to all the different islands.

Leaving Townsville ferry station.. on the way to Maggie

Arriving at Maggie Island!

I was gonna drive, then the guy said it was stick shift.. Dad told me I couldn't drive ): Maybe I should have though.. considering he almost got us killed driving on the right side of the road!

Beautiful view off the island

Random beached boat

Dock, probably destroyed by Yasi (cyclone that blew through last year)

golf course on the island, dad appreciated this one

I liked the artwork (:

No idea what this sign means, but they were all over the place

Cemetary... check out how there are fences around all the graves.. interesting.

Cute little town

Right off the beach, toilets (bathrooms) and such?

The island's marina.. had to take a pic!

And the best sign of all! I made my dad turn around just so I could snag a pic!
